Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) History
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Ministry of Zion Baptist Church was established in the early fall of 1972 to sustain the memory of the contributions that Dr. king made to God's ministry and to all mankind, to provide a forum in which to educate ourselves and our children, and to ensure that a medium was presented through which the congregation could assume a proactive role in keeping the "Dream" alive.
Under the Directorship of Reverend Dr. B.J. Lowry, Deacon Brinmore Britton became the first Chairman. He was joined by Rev. Jerry Bivens, Evangelist Marlene Barker, Miss Juanita Adams, Miss Natalie Booner, and Mr. Bernard Corbett. They became known as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Ministry of Zion Baptist Church. On Monday, January 15, 1973, the first annual observance of Dr. King's birthday was held. This became the first memorial service in honor of Dr. King in the city of New York. The Reverend Herbert Daughtry, Pastor of the Pentecostal House of Prayer on Atlantic Avenue delivered the keynote address. In February 1986, Reverend Dr. M.M. Peace, Jr. was installed as our new pastor. He continued the tradition of the annual celebration of Dr. King’s birthday. For over 35 years, as part of that celebration, at least one deserving high school student with outstanding achievement has received a scholarship in honor of the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
